DEPARTMENT OF HEMATOLOGY

Are you feeling weak?
Do you know your blood group?
This department will help you solve these queries

A department dedicated to the different diseases of blood. Basically, as was taught in our school, its study of RBCs(Red blood cells); WBCs(White Blood Cells) and Platelets.

Hemoglobin: The word anemia is known by all, commonly called as low hemoglobin. It can be caused due to continuous loss of blood(e.g. regular menstrual cycle) or due to lack of iron or Vitamin B12. A simple blood test of hemoglobin and CBC(Complete blood count) will help understand the nature of anemia and thus necessary treatment can be initiated.

Complete Blood Count(also known as WBC count): Generally, the normal CBC count is 4000/mcl to 11000/mcL. However, in case of any infection, the CBC count will either increase beyond 11000 or decrease less than 4000. Hence, this test is an indirect method to suggest about presence of infection in our body.

Blood cancers: Different types of blood cancer (leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma etc) can be screened by a simple CBC test. Why delay it then? Just ask for it atleast once a year.

Platelets: Platelets help in clotting where bleeding occurs. Sometimes, if we get injured by some pointed metal, the bleeding doesn’t stop and takes time. Hence, it is necessary to check for bleeding and clotting time which is generally done before any operations.

How are these tests performed

The laboratory is equipped with state of art automated machines with high precision with frequent checking on quality control and all the machines are interfaced with computer so that the values are automatically transferred thereby preventing typographical errors.

Prevention is better than cure: Its time for us to be proactive in identifying the disease before it creates health problems in our life, amongst our family members and society at large.

Check your hemoglobin regularly:

Normal value of hemoglobin in males is 13.5 to 17.5 while that for females is 12 to 15.5. It should be preferable for children and males to check once a year while for females to check for their hemoglobin level every 6 monthly to prevent development of anemia. Also, green leafy vegetables and jaggery are rich in iron and helps prevent anemia.

Know your blood group:

Even today, many people don’t know about their blood group which is very important in case of unprecedented conditions like accident where every minute counts. So know your blood group and save it in your ID card. Transfusion of wrong blood group can be a life threatening.
